Rant Time: Unreal 5.5.4 Bloated To Hell

With the team at Icebreaker Industries LLC, the team behind Project Borealis, releasing their Unreal Engine movement system, which would add janky Source Engine FPS movement into a Unreal Engine title such as surfing, accelerated back hopping, crouch jumping, and other iconic trademarks of the Source Engine, I decided to add this to my own project.

First things First, that it took nearly half an hour to get from creating the project to the first boot is outrageous.

As I write this article, I am still waiting on Unreal Editor 5.5.4 to finish compiling shaders while I sit here wanting to blow my brains out in frustration.

Part of me is tempted to migrate to Unreal Engine 4.0, as the team over at Running With Scissors (RWS) used that for “No Regerts” and while that game has its own jank, I feel I have some luck since I am in the RWS Discord Server and might be able to nag someone for help if I needed to.

I just want to make my dorky Source Engine-inspired game and not have my brain want to fall out of my ear.

I don’t want to make a major post about this until I have at least alpha footage to show off, but I just needed to vent about this.

Until next time
