So many people are aware ThinkPads are Linux user’s best friend, hell it’s become a common meme at this point “Oh use a ThinkPad”
Hell, I even talked about them in my post “Swine of the Week: Lenovo Group Limited” well seems they’re slowly turning shit around, and I have mixed feelings about this.
I’ve been using a ThinkPad T480 for about 9 weeks now just as something I can chuck into a messenger bag and bolt out the door with but still connect to Wi-Fi, has enough ports and most important is repairable/upgradable.
When I got the machine it had 8GB of ram and a 256GB SSD which I swapped out for 32 GB of ram and a 2tb SSD making it into a perfect mobile workhorse for when I have to remote into a system or just want to get out and about.
Thankfully, the dark ages might be over as Lenovo is starting to have non-soldered ram again on it’s laptops with models such as Xiaoxin SE 2025 I can only hope that at some point this trickles down to the ThinkPad line, since I keep seeing machines only 4 years old having dead ram online; if I am going to buy a laptop I want a sub 15-inch laptop with replaceable parts or upgradable parts that’s not a huge ask.
Now, the only thing I worry about is if these new ThinkPads will have the AMD/Intel Spyware on them.
Yes, I view AMD Secure Technology and Intel Management Engine as spyware and view that it is out right malicious software.
I mean, look at how you define Spyware
“…malicious software that enters a user’s computer, gathers data from the device and user, and sends it to third parties without their consent…”
Sounds like the damn Intel Management Engine to me since it runs as a rootkit you cannot remove easily and can send traffic back to a 3rd party without the user consent or even the user’s knowledge. Then again, what do I know? I’m just someone who has seen the dangers of sociopathic people such as those in my birth country.
Until next time
