Recently I discovered that DeadJournal and LiveJournal clones still existed; alongside this, I got to thinking of how we’ve lost the art of really stylized blogs, so with the creation of “A Blog on The Edge of Madness” I decided to remake the vintage style for the site.
I started with the idea of having part of the site design overlap the header of the post after seeing an old theme on LiveJournal.
So it took me a while of reading how to do this with the CSS code and features for BootStrap for ClassicPress [a fork of WordPress].
Thankfully it wasn’t that much of an issue, but I was so glad nothing broke when it came to plugins. I was debating few other platforms but in the end just did ClassicPress
I don’t want to go into a whole rant about the shitshow with WordPress and their “fearless leader” Matt who wanted to harass developers and a hosting company he no longer was funding.
But if you’re looking for the full story, there are some great videos from creators like Theo – t3․gg or Fireship are great places to get the short form and summary.
One of the most frustrating parts was finding a way to integrate UserPic-style mood images into the blog post title, mostly since I had never done something like that before, but thankfully I knew someone who was able to help me work through the first time dealing with the backend this deeply.
I was glad in the end it worked out and I was able to make a great custom theme.
There are still some features on my plan to add, but for now I am really happy with how well it has turned out so far.
Until next time
